We often pronounced WI-FI full name as “wireless fidelity”. but that is not true. The term wi-fi is used by marketing firm for publicity. Now even big technology company also used this as marketing strategy.
WI-FI is a radio frequency based technology which convert data into radio waves and transmit it. Its mostly used 2.4 Ghz and 5.0 Ghz frequency bands. WI-FI is using IEEE protocol 802.11. The “WI-FI Alliance” agency which combination of big technology company are responsible for developing standards for this wi-fi technology. The creation of this alliance in 1999. In general the range of wi-fi is 20 to 150 meters. But it can very from obstacles like walls or different wireless technology. The speed measured in Mbps(Megabits per second) to Gbps(Gigabit per seconds).
Types of Wi-Fi standards
Standard | year | Frequency | Max data speed |
802.11a (Wi-Fi 1) | 1999 | 5Ghz | 54 Mbps
|
802.11b (Wi-Fi 2) | 1999 | 2.4 Ghz | 11 Mbps |
802.11g (Wi-Fi 3) | 2003 | 2.4 Ghz | 54 Mbps |
802.11n (Wi-Fi 4) | 2009 | 5Ghz &5Ghz | 600 Mbps |
802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5) | 2014 | 5Ghz &5Ghz | 1.3 Gbps |
802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6) | 2019 | 5Ghz &5Ghz | 10-12 Gbps |
802.11a or WI-Fi 1:
This is first WIFI standard created in 1999. Which works on 5 Ghz frequency. The maximum data speed of this standard is 54 Mbps. But sometime it lost its data throughput rate due to obstacles like walls.
802.11b or Wi-Fi 2:
This standard also created in 1999. It works on 2.4 Ghz frequency. But its top speed is only 11 Mbps. This standards increase popularity of WI-FI.
802.11g or Wi-Fi 3:
This standard comes in 2003. This Wi-fi has maximum speed of 54 Mbps. This WI-Fi works on 5 Ghz Frequency. This standard increase the popularity in world.
802.11n or Wi-Fi 4:
Comes in 2009 This version of WI-FI works on both 2.5 and 5 Ghz frequency and maximum speed is 600 Mbps.
802.11ac or Wi-Fi 5:
This standards is currently used in maximum places. Approved in 2014 and its also used MIMO technology to increase speed. The maximum speed is 1.3 Gbps.
802.11ax or Wi-FI 6:
This is the most latest standards 802.11 ax or also known as WI-FI 6. To avoid confusing names this standards projected as wi-fi 6. And all previous standard given numbers. This standards can increase speed by 30 to 40 %. So the maximum speed of this standards is 10 to 12 GBPS.
There are also some other standard waiting for approve. This standards are 802.11aj, 802.11ak, 802.11ay, 802.11az, 802.11ba in near future all this standards can be approve.
